The Golden State is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, not a single part of the state is enduring dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened fire dangers and strained its massive agricultural sector.
A Chart Indicates No Dryness
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and fatalities. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, areas like northeastern California were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
Yet, experts warn that being out of drought should not be confused with complete water security. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.
This frozen reservoir, which provides approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to make predictions for the months ahead.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a California water official. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the rest of the year.
